I'm sure there would have been thousands of Dream Team coaches around the country with hearts in mouths on Saturday night as they watched their beloved Dream Team stalwart, Chad Cornes, clutching his hand following a horrific mishap. At that stage, Chad was on -1 and with so many coaches naming him captain, it looked like it was going to be low scoring week all round for Dream Teamers. But like the true champion he is, Cornes came back and finished the match, reaching a semi-respectable 65.
The bad news is, Chadwick will miss some footy. The estimate had been as much as 4 weeks, but currently the word is Chad may miss only two DT rounds (taking into account the Dream Team game in a few weeks time). But how many of you can sit a $431,200 player on the bench for even that long? Especially considering the already gaping holes in so many backlines at the moment. The other question is will he hit the ground running when he returns to AFL footy or will he need a few weeks to get back into it. Here are a few defenders who could potentially fill the void while he's sidelined:
Jake King $374,900
King has been in terrific form this season, averaging 96. Top ranked defender (after Chadwick, of course).
Heath Shaw $377,300
Has shown some up and down form in '08 but has shown enough to suggest that he'd be a suitable replacement. Averaging 94, with a season high of 125
Brian Lake $316,500
Very disappointing season, averaging 75, but a season high 126 last week suggests he might be on the way up. Very reasonably priced for a player of his potential.
Garrick Ibbotson $144,100
Good pick up for those looking to free up some cash. Averaging 66, with a season high of 99 coming last weekend. Is sure to get plenty of game time for the Dockers this year.
