The Goat and The White Maggots – thank God, footy’s back.
Ladies get out of the way of the TV, Mum, Classic FM will have to wait ‘cause I need to listen to the footy, tell the gf to go to the sho store by herself because its that time of year – Footy Time! I don’t care if the missus wants you to take a trip down to the nursery for some blood and bone or if the kids nappy smells like a madras open sewer - some things are more important.
Time for the goat and the white Maggot to have a look at a few interesting points for the completed round one.
Player of the round
Brad Johnson (182)
For a bloke who didn’t do all that much all game he came out with a cracking score, boosted by his goals and efficiency in the final quarter. If you were lucky enough to captain him you should have been well in the 2000’s and that’s a great score for round 1. The next best doggie was Adam Cooney with 118 points - you don’t get much more ‘Player of the Round’ than that.
Other Notables: Joel Corey (145), David Mundy (132) Nick Reiwoldt (144) Jonathon Brown (138)
The run down
The siren rang and the cries of “Judd da da da dah” ran out at the G for the opening round and the confidence of the carlton fans was at a (ambitious) high. Chris Judd (102) didn’t let the blue baggers down. It wasn’t a massive score but its one that will continue. Nothing changes for the Juddernaught. As expected Nick Stevens was far to cheap to be true and delivered the ball with class to rack up 89 points.
Kane ‘The Urinator’ Johnson was sublime to pick up a solid 132 super coach points. Perhaps the black hair dye had soaked into his brain but the one man who did disappoint was Brett Delideo. Only 71 points but not something that should continue as he was well held by Jordan Bannister (42 bpoints)
The two main boys to consider at the poorer side of the city of churches are the Cornes brothers. Chad with 128 and Kane with 109 – these two are as safe a bet as a Jeff Farmer suspension. Captain choice number 1!
6 Scores over 100 for the Geelong team says that the trend of last year will continue. They are all so pricey but if the drop get all over them. If you were hoping to get James Bartell (75) wait till at least round 4. His value will slide big time unless he pulls out some big games (Break even of 111 at start) which will certainly see his value drop dramatically. If he has another below par game sit tight and watch him plummet!
Aaron Sandilands was an alternative ruckman that many sided for over Dean Cox and his score of 82 was good but nothing to prove he was the right choice. Byron Schammer (53) is someone who has so much potential but his poor disposal just makes him a bad choice for supercoach – here’s one who was hoping he would be better this year.
Tadgh Kennelly (140) (as predicted) is certain to continue his form of last year and is one of the steals of the comp. Damn why did I go for Jason Gram!!! Brett Kirk had a stinker and only scored 52 but Jarrad McVeigh, a hot tip for the year posted a brilliant 96 to round out the swannies
Its simple – I like Big Cox and how could you not. A score of 166 is the equivalent of 3 Jeff White’s (59) and those who left him out will regret. With Mark Seaby getting 104 it was a dominant ruck performance at the Eagles. Daniel Kerr saw no effects of a Cousinless\Juddless midfield and polled 115 points – nothing a beer won’t fix hey Kerrz?
A name change dosen’t do anyone a favour. Brian Lake….. what have you done? you should have stayed a Harris!
Jason Porplyzia (89) was dominant in the midfield. It looked like the crows tactic of playing the youngsters in the guts was not going to work but he came through and had an effervescent last quarter. The White Maggots smokie of the year
The Hawks were brilliant against a ‘turn against our players’ Melbourne. 9 players scored over 100 and the way they played its not surprising. If it’s a toss up between 2 boys go for the guy who plays for the hawks, they love to spread it around.
Side note - The Goat and the White Maggot witnessed a punch on in the members between two 80YO veteran fans. Stay off Melbourne players… and that’s an order diggers.
For those of you (and there were many) who went for Scotty Lucas (19) start trading as he’s out for 10-12. For those of you who went Matthew Lloyd (144) (like…. 2 of you) congratulations as he was superb and relished the space left over. He’s a fantastic trade option if you need a top class forward who will give you some consistency. Jobe Watson racked up 144 points in the midfield benefiting from a heavily tagged Stanton (44)
We like: Jarryn Geary (103), Mark Nikoski (82), Thomas Murphy (70), Mark McVeigh (130)
Disappointments: Jordan McMahon (55), Michael Johnson (52), Brad Symes (20), Brent Reilly (57), Adam Goodes (49).... what happened to the NAB cup form Goodesy?
Tagger Watch
Cameron Ling
An old fan favourite is the pink pig and after the sterling job that Brady Rawlings did on Brent Stanton he has to be considered\wary of. Stanton at just over $500,000 was one of our players that we tipped for big things for the year but it will be interesting to see how he copes with a hard tag, particulary now that Jimmy is gone. It’s our tip that Stanton will have a sterling season but the pink pig will make him look like a penny this week. Don’t be stupid and captain him as Lingy will dominate.
Question of Fear
Will Big Fev turn up to round 2 or will he be weeping at home over the nuptials of Clarkey and the Bings?
