A well-equipped Dockers side scored a comfortable win against their cross-town rivals. The Eagles went in without several of their remaining stars and gave little insight into their 2008 fortunes without former champions Chris Judd and Ben Cousins.
The Brief...
- The Eagles were without Daniel Kerr, Dean Cox, Michael Braun, Tyson Stenglein, Andrew Embley and Adam Hunter
- Freo's Paul Hasleby is out for the season requiring a left-knee reconstruction
The Dockers
There were some impressive scores put together in the Freo camp. David Munday piled on 91 DT points and 112 SC's and could live up to his 2006 promise after a pretty disapointing 2007. DT Hero is getting excited! Daniel Gilmore took on the second ruck role with Warnock missing and had a field day, amassing 95 DT's and 110 SuperCoach points. Josh Carr (90,101), Des Headland (83,128) and Dean Soloman (84,76) were also impressive.
Down the list there are plenty of familiar names for the Dockers who were underdone. Matthew Pavlich (65,86) will definitely do better, while Matthew Carr (60,51), Mark Johnson (57,74), Aaron Sanilands (56,14), Jeff Farmer (55,46), Michael Johnson (50,59) and Brett Peake (22,34) were all below their best.
Freo have the oldest list in the league and a mostly full-strength side played, but one young Docker to put high on the list is Rhys Palmer who totalled 46 DT's and 59 SC points with limited game time.
The Eagles
Without many stars, most of the players you'd expect to step up for the Eagles... stepped up for the Eagles. Brett Jones led the way with 86 DT points and 99 SC's, while Mark Seaby (79,93) scored well around the ground despite being beaten in the ruck.
Adam Selwood (67,71) and Chad Fletcher (65,56) were solid in the middle without and Brent Staker (68,77) is a big hope to get more time there in 2008. AFL's French connection Mark LeCras (70,59) was impressive up forward and it'll be interesting to see if he can continue to present.
Matt Rosa (43,53) and Chad Jones (25,26) didn't get too involved in the action, and Matt Priddis (24,35) sat out the second half with a corked calf.
Scott "Another" Selwood was the best of the young Eagles with 62 DT and 51 SuperCoach points, while Brad Ebert (38,43) also got invlved.
What's Next?
Freo travel to Adelaide to take on the very in-form Crows in a NAB Cup quarter-final on Sunday.
The Eagles travel down the road to Albany and come up against a Collingwood side recovering from a trip to Dubai and sporting plenty of frequent flyer points!
