In light of the 2008 Supercoach launch we have decided to give you an insight on how we choose our elite *cough cough* Supercoach Sides. Lets be honest, u can read all you want about which players are going to go up, down and not play at all. More than likely you will have a list of 55 players with $22 Million worth of salaries. We try to be different than all the other site’s here at Dream Team Hero, so The Goat and the White Maggot are going to give some strategy ideas that will help u filter out all the rubbish. Last year our two teams played in a semi final and we put out two sides out for the world to see. The White Maggot was judged to have the better side. So what we are going to do is roll out both our strategies and again ask for opinions.
The Goat
The Bottom Up Approach – I use a simple theory when choosing my Supercoach side, which is the complete opposite of when I’m out on a Saturday night. I let the cheap players dictate my side where as on a Saturday night the ladies had are all class. I wont reveal the White Maggot’s strategy yet but his is basically the total opposite. These are the steps I take with my $10 mill.
· As soon as I logon I scroll straight down to the bottom of the page and see who are the cheap players. Both rookies and players who are discounted due to poor form or injuries last season. The guys I love at these prices I purchase no questions asked. Last year guys like Lappin, Priddis, NG Brown, Selwood and Luke McEntree!! were the first ones chosen.(2008 Selections: Nicoski $236,100 Jamie McNamara $116,400)
· I then scroll to the top and look at the elite players and compare these to the number of good value mid range players and how many cheap players I have chosen. Last year I discovered that there were a lot more cheap forwards and mids than backmen. The way I thought around this was there is no point getting the cheap backs because they are not going to make enough money to be upgraded to star defenders as well as the star backs being more valuable because the mid range defenders are not as good. This mean I started the season with Bowden, Fletcher, McPhee and Heath Shaw as starting backmen.(2008 Selections: Needs more Research)
· There are very few players each year who go from average to elite. Last year Carazzo and Brian Harris did this. The 3-4 who I think are going to do this and then chosen. (2008 Selections: Des Headland $424,200 Jay Nash $387,300)
· I then let the money I have left over dictate the stars I get. If I find a lot of cheap guys it means I can stop the rest of the team with stars. I try and get as many stars as possible with that money, knowing with the money I will make with the cheaper guys more stars will come as the season goes on (2008 Selections: Pavlich $620,400 Kane Cornes $602,000)
· The final decision is where you play the multi position players. Eg. Chad Cornes last year. I use another simple theory. I simply have a look at the depth in each position and put him where the shallow end of the pond. Last year I thought there were less star forwards than defenders so I played him forward. That worked well for me as many forwards dropped in price as the year went on(B.Johnson, Hall, Bruce etc) while many defenders held there value. Having C.Cornes forward helped make my forward line a strength
So that’s basically Team Goat’s Bottom Up Approach which has resulted in two top 3 finishes in the past 2 years. It’s over to the White Maggot
The White Maggot
Well what can I say. I like my fantasy footy like my ladies, from the top down. Not surprised that The Goat went from the Bottom up, still that says it all about the fella, plays it from behind if you know what I mean.
My tactic is to concentrate on the top tier and then work my way down. The Captain is my first pick even if not named all year he will be considered week in week out. I look to fill the key spots on my roster with the guns that you can’t look past such, then find the bargains, squad players and then the McEntees (don’t be embarrassed if you have to look him up!).
- Generally I have a number one pick in mind, the guy that I will make the Captain of my team week in week out. I look for consistency here – you have got to rely on this guy to give you a hundred points each week. Steer clear of anyone who is injury prone. (2008 Selections: Bowden $629,000, Bartell $675,200)
- Next, I try to find the studs that I need to fill the key positions. I think that you need at least 2 of each in each position. Last year I found it really hard to get value for money so was prepared to pay a little bit more for the studs in those spots. (2008 Selections: Luke Hodge $594,300)
- The sleepers come next. Look for guys who have been traded recently (Brad Symes), had a below par season the year before or are coming off injury (Nick Stevens). Sheer money makers… Treat them better than Britney Spears treats her knickers…. A necessity. (2008 Selections Mark Couglan $260,500, Brent Reily $382,300)
- Fill in the gaps…. I always play this and the rookies off with each other. If I find somebody that I have to have I make sure they go in early so that I have enough money in the bank. Guys that I have had my eyes on for a while or who are undervalued go in here. Midfielders are the easiest to pick up so look to spend a few more pennies up forward and down back. (2008 Selections: Jason Porplyzia $349,500, )
- You don’t earn points for those on the bench so you need to be looking for value for money here. Simply get the guys who are certains to play most of the year and are as cheap as they will get. That means the high draft picks have to be in your team and then the young kids that should get a run like Andrew Browne and Sam Butler (2008 Selections: Leroy Jetta $152,900, Andrew Browne $176,500)
That’s about it ladies and gents, find the guns, find the bargains and find the rest. Use all the tools available to you and spread your team out.
Things of note
- Keep track of the pre and off season. Last thing you want is blokes in your side who spent the weekend at the movies injured
- More than 3 from 1 side in your squad is too many
- Newly traded players can be a help and a distraction. Everyone wants to feel they discovered a player but really the tried and tested can be more worthwhile
- Money is wasted on the bench –UPGRADE YOUR STARTERS!
- Durable certain starters only
- Haselby already injured as predicted by us last week!
- The Goat and White Maggot spent the offseason honing their fantasy skills playing Fantasy NBA Basketball on Yahoo. Corey Maggette anyone?

Yeah about the money tip... would you put Troy Simmonds on the bench? Last year i had Darcy on the field and 2 fairly bottom price players on the bench, and regreted it very much!

Way I have it set at the moment is Coxie and the big snake on the ground and then kruezer and a nobody on the bench.<br>Way I see it... the snake is a bargain and I am going to start him. If he hits form this year he will put up numbers as good as Sandi or Fraser - wasted on the bench

I feel your pain Kyn except i had Darcy as a reserve as I also got Hamish McIntosh dead cheap at the start of the year. I think Simmonds is coming off a far less severe injury(Darcy missed 2 years) and is younger so i think he'll be a definite starter. You might want to look at a cheap bench backup who will play like Griffen from Adelaide or Hampson from Carlton

The first thing I noticed about your team is the lack of cox and I reckon leaving him out is playing with fire. Simmonds is certainly cheap and the bargain of the ruck stocks but he is a second ruckman not the leader. I try to pick guys that are going to get me 100 points or close to it and Gardi I doubt will do that, especially competing against King (a better option). Sandi is maybe someone you should think about picking up, he is pretty cheap and word is he is looking fantastic - tore Seaby a new one in the derby over there. Johnstone is a little bit of a risk but he could pay off playing in a better midfield. Ling, you can do better than him, this is not a game for taggers - he is to up and down. Timmy Boyle has a lot of competition up forward and someone is going to loose out with Williams coming back in. He was great last year but might have to go down back to get some game time. Kenny McGregor is one that might step up in that price range or spend a bit more and get Porpyzlia or the flying Scotsman (Gus Monfries). Thompson is another who i up and down - Mitch Morton might be worth a punt. I like L. Hansen, he's a good pick to have on the bench and I also like your bench up forward. Bachir Houli could be a little pricey to have there though.<br>No Pavlich? He is a regular each year for me.

I think u will find Griffen is still at Adelaide Malmc. There is an article about him on afl.com.au today<br><br>In relation to your team fellow Tigers supporter i love that u have loaded your backline with stars. I have done the same thing. I do feel u have spread yourself a little thing up forward though with to much money in the midfield. I would take C.Cornes out and upgrade a forward to a Pav or King Brown. C.Cornes had an amazing season, i think he will go down in price. Pick him up later

Hmm Interesting team KiwiTig. You have gone for a balanced lineup rather than stars. I love the picks of Newman, Birchall and Milburn. Both r super consistent stars. Your midfield is eerily similar to mine. I love Nash, Coughlan, K.Cornes, Schammer and even feel Embley could turn into an elite this season. Forward line has plenty of star power. All in all very solid side. <br>The only suggestion i can make is to GET OFF KRUEZER. The Maggot and others will disagree with me here. He only got 8 touches and 1 Mark last year. He is extremely exspensive for a rookie and how many rucks are good in their first year? Yes he will play and yes he might make you a little money but nothing like Selwood did last year. I prefer your other picks of Morton and Masten. Downgrade Kruezer and upgrade one of your backs like petterd

Hi Guys. Am l glad l've found this site. This is my first crack at the Fantasy Football and l am really blown away with the concept. Can't wait for it to kick off. When l sat down to have a go at putting together a team it made me realise just how little l know about the player lists outside my own club. Anyway, what do you all think? Any suggestions would be apprieciated.<br>BACKS: Bowden, Milburn, H. Shaw, Lovett-Murray, Mattner, Ellis (Pfieffer, Greenwood). <br>MIDFIELD: K.Cornes, Hodge, N.Stevens, Schammer, Butler, Sherman (Myers, Ebert)<br>RUCKS: Coxs, Simmonds (Meeson, Tippert)<br>FORWARDS: Pavlich, Riewoldt, Chapman, Roughead, N.Thomson, Didak, Jetta (Henderson, J.Smith). <br>P.S: l was keen to put in Coughland and Deledio but not sure if that is due to me being a Tigers fan. Also is Bowden really worth that much? <br>

I love your team psychochicken (What is it with Richmond supporters on this site???). Great start in defence and yes, I think Bowden is worth that much. I went for Cornes as am a little unsure what effect McMahon will have to Bowdens scores but he will continue to get the soft touches and will retain most, if not all of his value. There are only a few guys woth over 600k and he is one of them. Lovett-Murray, am a big fan of him this year, he looks hot! Your midfiled is a little weak but you have chosen to spend the money elsewhere which I think is the right thing to do. Sherman is a waste though. I don't think he has really got a decent position in the brissy squad. In butler, schammer and the mentioned sherman you *possibly* have three blokes who may not get a run. Rucks - great. I hate Didak in this game, the goat rates him and you need to keep an eye on Jetta, if he dosen't get named round one get off him. He runs a little hot and cold the wee man. Delids is a great pick but you can't fit him in that squad.... 3 studs in one position is enough. Hall is cheap to btw

Bomberboy21 - First and most obvious suggestion is Nicoski(WCE) for $236,100. He is a bargain for this price if u dont already have him. Apart from that u have Xavier Ellis(Haw) for $258,300 and has looked good so far or I also like Paul Bevan for $298. But by far Nicoski is the best option

Hi Goat.... before i start i would like to say that your Super Coach stratergy just like your stratergy with women will once again prove your down fall this year.... i have one question/statement i would like you to reply to before i go on and demolish your fantasy footy credentials.<br><br>I believe the trick in this comp is to NOT pick up that player that is coming back from injury i.e. simmonds! why....because EVERY other person out there who knows a little about fantasy footy will be picking him up also! the trick to Super Coach is to do THE OPPOSITE of what everyone else is doing....because lets say round 1 simmonds duds that means 80% of super coach members who were stupid enough to pick up that cripple dud out also....the smart thing to do would be to create 3 or 4 teams with different email accounts and hope that as of round one - one of those teams pulls out a good week.<br><br>The trick to Super Coach is "DON'T BE A SHEEP....OR SHOULD I SAY GOAT.....AND.....STUDY STUDY STUDY"<br><br>Regards,<br><br>Team Bareback.

Just to give you all some background Team Bareback(made 3 out of the past 4 grand finals) is from my fantasy comp back in Perth that we have been running for 8 years now, it is draft based and different than supercoach. If anyone wants some info on it please email me. <br>In response to this blatant attempt to rock the boat, we at dreamteamhero DO NOT need to resort or condone having multiple sides. We roll out one side and are successful doing that. As for doing the opposite to what other supercoaches are doing, this has some merit. There are some cash cows u need to get on, but there are some that are over-rated and if you are smart enough can choose other options and win a comp doing this. There is nothing worse than playing a team that there is only 4 players different. Infact bareback mayhave inspired us for our next column which can provide you with good alternative options to the obvious picks<br>PS. Carlo u know 2008 is the year of the Goat

Doogie i think Seaby will be better than last year as he will get more minutes but i can't see him being a starting ruckman in your side and is to expensive to have on the bench. The bench should be for cash cows only.<br>Gilmore u need to monitor round 1. He may get in the side on a half back flank or first backup ruckman ahead of Warnock. We know if he plays he is money, unfortunately i can't give u a defenitive answer on that question
